Lake Castaic
I still remember going bass fishing at Lake Castaic the first day it was open to the public. It was the mid-seventies, I left straight from high school football practice to sample this much talked about bass fishery. The big talk when it first opened was about the size of the launch ramp. It was the largest ever constructed in the west at that time. Well now the talk is about the tremendous bass population. Castaic lake for the most part has always been a very good bass lake. It has also always been a bit querky. What I mean is the lake is famous for some really strange and off the wall bass paterns. Mud lines, barrel booms, under spins, and scroungers, just to name a few. This is what makes Lake Castaic so much fun. It is always a challenge. The winter is time for the big swim bait, and scooping live shad to use for bait. The lake has little or no boat traffic and these two techniques dominate. The spring allows a variety of lures to be super productive. The jig in a brown/purple color and a drop shot are tough to beat. The swim bait is still a major player also. Fish will be up-and-in. Try to focus your efforts in less than 20 feet of water. Summer means "suspend" at Castaic Lake. Keep your eye open for schooling fish in the coves, canyons, and pockets. These bass love to suspend and chase bait(threadfin shad) throughout the summer season. The under spins, and scroungers do the real damage. Fall can produce lots of fish on the drop shot worm. The best color year round is " Arron's magic". Fish it on 8lb. test line, with a 3/16 oz. Bakudan drop shot weight. I hope these few tips will help.
