Finished up last night with absolutely ālake likeā conditions at the channel Islands. Stopped to fish yellowtail west end of Anacapa Island to no avail, made a few deep water stops and ran into big schools of 5 to 12 pound sheepshead. Moved inside for some excellent calico bass fishing and wrapped up a fantastic trip. Absolutely crazy good calico bass fishing today. We had 5-6 double hook ups today and everyone of them and there was a solid 3 1/2 pound calico bass followed by a 2 pound calico bass never caught one solo. Mixed it up with the limits of rockfish. Absolutely wide-open barracuda fishing today. Surface iron in a variety of colors and an umbrella rig did the trick. Guys kept a couple each to barbecue tonight all the rest were released… at one point we were catching a barracuda every cast for almost a half an hour. After running a bunch of freshwater fishing trips this week it was great to get out with my great friend and longtime client Luke Fitzpatrick today Anacapa Island. Absolutely magnificent weather! Fishing was ultra tough… I actually fished a bunch today also which is not normal for me. Luke and I grinded away at it to catch ourselves a Bakerās dozen of small calico bass. Water temperature was 59Ā°. Water was crystal beautiful clear with visibility to 30 feet. Little to no swell. We finally have some nice weather for our saltwater anglers and weāre running calico bass fishing trips seven days a week during the months of January and February. These are shallow water calico trips fishing plastics āUp and Inā. Really really fun fishing in less than 15ā of water and I provide all the rods reels and tackle that youāll need for the day. Of course youāre welcome to bring your own tackle or your freshwater baitcasting rods as they work perfect for this type of fishing.
